This may be the world's oldest surviving example of animation.
A jumping goat is painted on a vase, and when the vase is rotated, it appears to move. The vase was dedicated to the Goddess Murkum, and found in Persia in 1970. (obviously the sound track was added by someone). Here's more textual info:

An Italian team of archaeologists unearthed the bowl goblet in the 1970s from a burial site in Iran’s Burnt City, but it was only recently that researchers noticed the images on the bowl tell an animated visual story.
The oldest cartoon character in the world is a goat leaping to get the leaves on a tree.

Before Mickey came Bonzo the Dog and Felix the Cat, and earlier still were Ally Sloper and Max and Moritz (both from the 1860s), Brown, Jones and Robinson of Punch (1850s) and Honoré Daumier’s Ratapoil (1830s). However, it is now generally acknowledged that the first ever popular fictional cartoon character was created in 1809 – more than a century before Mickey Mouse. A scrawny and eccentric elderly clergyman/schoolmaster,

he was hugely successful, spawning many imitators and even creating the first ever market for tie-in merchandise. His name was Dr Syntax and he was the creation of a distinguished British artist who celebrates the 250th anniversary of his birth this year and who is perhaps better known for his topographical watercolours, portraits and political cartoons: Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827).

Now that's an animated Answer of the Day nomination for you on Sept 3rd.
Check it out and vote for yourself Here!
Thanks for the nomination and tip!
I saw the goat vase a while ago and thought it was really neat. I've always liked animation, and the idea of someone doing this type of advanced art back then blew me away. It was back when Stonhenge was nothing more than a circular ditch with wooden posts, the Greeks were discovering bronze, Troy was being built and China was discovering the pottery wheel. Amazing!
