In my opinion the most famous photographs are the photographs that had an impact on photography itself or on society in general. You can see most of these images at the link below. One of the most famous is the photo taken by Steve McCurry of the Afghan Girl for National Geographic. This image had a fantastic impact around the world.
The photography of marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima in 1945 had such a cultural impact that a monument was created from it in Washington DC. New York fire fighters recreated the moment on 9/11/2001. The portrait of Salvador Dali with cats flying in the background changed the way we think about portraits. Charles Porter’s photograph of the Oklahoma City Bombing is another Pulitzer Prize winning photo that also is world famous.
