What are some of the best movies that are based in real-life events?

One of the things that attracted me to certain movies if it is based on a true story or a real person's life and experiences. It brings many lessons in life that too. Like the movie Erin Brokovich which starred Julia Roberts, Catch Me If You Can, Schindler's list, and many more. What are some movies based on real life events that are worth watching for?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

One of the best movies I have ever seen that was based on real life events had to be 'Something the Lord Made'. I always talk about this movie, which was actually made for HBO and sadly was not shown in movie theaters. I had this recommended to me on netflix. I was very intrigued, as it had a 5 star rating, which is very rare for movies. It is based on the research of Dr. Alfred Blalock and Vivian Thomas, who found a way to reverse a heart condition that children suffer from. I don't want to spoil the movie with any more details, but defiantly a must see!

I have watched some other movies that are very good, which are based on true events. Some of them, disturbing, although great movies.

Heart: The Marilyn Bell Story
Seven Years in Tibet
The Tunnel
A River Runs Through It
Silkwood
North Country
Finding Neverland
Hotel Rwanda
Freedom Writers
We Were Soldiers
Angelia's Ashes
Sophie Scholl: The Final Days
The Rosa Parks Story
The Burning Bed
Amazing Grace

This is what I can think of, right off the top of my head. This is my favorite type of movie. I have watched very many, more than I can think of. I know I am missing very many and some are so disturbing to me, I don't want to recall them.

I think the best movie that I ever saw that was based on some real life events, would have to be ‘’I Am Sam. It was such an amazing movie. The cast in that movie was very great, and to think that the whole story was actually true that it really happened just got inside of my heart in a few ways.
One of the biggest parts and things behind the movie is showing the love that one father has for his daughter, even though he suffers from mental disabilities, is just moving. He fights to keep her and raise her, and eventually is allowed to be in her life. I love movies that are based on real life events especially when the movie has a happy ending!

Here are some of the movies I loved when growing up:

Apollo 13 (1995) — Story of the Apollo 13 lunar mission, based on the book Lost Moon by Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger. Directed by Ron Howard.

Selena (1997) — Based on the life of Mexican-American singer Selena Qunitanilla Perez.

Patch Adams (1998) — Story of the "medical doctor, clown, performer, social activist" Patch Adams. Directed by Tom Shadyac.

Saving Private Ryan (1998) — Story of the Niland Brothers during World War II. Directed by Steven Spielberg.

Catch Me if You Can (2002) — Story of con artist Frank Abagnale. Directed by Steven Spielberg

And some more recent ones:

We Are Marshall (2006) — Story of the aftermath of the 1970 plane crash that killed the entire Marshall University football team. Directed by McG.

300 (2007) — Fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC).

American Gangster (2007) — Based on the true life story of Frank Lucas, a former heroin dealer, and organized crime boss in Harlem during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
