What are some of the best fiction books of 2008?

I'm looking for a great new novel for my sister for Christmas, but also just to discover something new for myself. Interests include David Foster Wallace, Eggers, Palahniuk, Pynchon...List the book title/author and a brief summary of the book(s).
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

New York Times released their list of best fiction books for 2008. Here it is. Some titles appear particularly interesting, but I haven't read any on the list.

I don't read this type of stuff, but working at B&N I do know what is popular. However, books can differ so I'm only going to recommend authors.
Authors along this line you might consider are:
Christopher Moore

Bret Easton Ellis

You might also like Ken Follett
