What are some movies about playing poker?

My uncle absolutely loves playing poker. I usually buy him a movie every year for his birthday. I am not that familiar with movies that have issues related to poker or are just about poker in general. What are some good poker themed movies? He would like any that was Western or action/adventure style. I want to stay away from girlie films, that is if any poker movies would fit that description. Thanks.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are quite a few movies about playing poker. My favorite poker movie is Maverick (1994), starring Mel Gibson. You may recall that Maverick takes place in the old west and concludes with a showboat poker tournament. This movie is a remake, I think, because James Gardner (who plays Maverick's father in the movie) played the original Maverick.

Another favorite is The Sting (1973) starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. A Classic Film!

Other poker movies are:
-- Rounders (1998), starring Ed Norton and Matt Damon
-- The Cincinatti Kid (1965), starring Steve McQueen
-- Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), starring Nicholas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker (the best part of this movie is when the Elvis impersonators jump out of a plane)
-- Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
-- Born Yesterday (1965)
-- A Big Hand for a Little Lady (1966)

"Wild Bill" is a movie starring Jeff Bridges as Wild Bill Hickok (Dead Man's Hand Aces and 8's)
"Tombstone" is another good western movie with Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. (It's about Wyatt Earp but Doc Holiday is a card player.

But the best is "The Sting" as mentioned before.

I agree
Maverick is my personal Fav. It features 5 card draw.
Mel Gibson is awesome

I also love "Rounders." it is a great, modern day poker movie. Mostly Texas Hold'em, but some other games have cameos like 7 card stud. Ed Norton all the way.

The only movies i can think to add are "21" and "Rain man"
which feature Black Jack.

"Ocean's 11" and "Ocean's 13" are about robbing casinos, very entertaining.
So is "Reindeer games", not as entertaining.

"Tomb Stone" is a western with a lot of casino scenes. But i wouldn't say its a poker movie exactly.
