What are some non violent methods of self defense ?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

De-escalation, which is verbal self defense also known as "verbal Judo." It basically means to prevent, de-escalate, or end an attempted assault by using ones voice, tone and body language with a number of learned techniques.
Avoidance, which means being aware of and avoiding potentially dangerous situations. It also means removing at least one of the elements that makes violence possible--desire, distance, and decision.
And personal alarms. This is a way to practice passive self defense. A personal alarm is a small, hand-held device that makes a loud, high pitched noise to deter attackers because the noise will draw the attention of passersby.

M$Jeet Kune Do, Tae Kwon Do, Ju-jitsu. I have done the JKD and JJ on my own (reading and practicing the movements). Tae Kwon Do I did for about 2 years.
The boxing I did as part of a cop program.
Being my size though I rarely get into fights (6' 300lb more muscle then fat). I have some crazy Red neck in me mixed with Italian :p
I've taken jiujistu , taikwondo , judo and advanced sword training . But my favorite was american freestyle which i only took for a year and then moved on to mma.
All wonderful sports. I'm a green belt in tai, and hold a second degree blackbelt in judo & hope one day to reach grand master and get my red belt in either.
I commend you for suggesting braz/bjj thats using your head :P ;) ;)
For beginners i recommend krav maga for hand V, weapon defense.
P.S. I've had all three of these tactics used on me during class to demonstrate effectiveness. It works!

M$I'm a fan of the taser, personally. I also like pepper spray, although it's illegal for me to carry here in Canada.
If it's possible, passive resistance is even better, though that would only work on certain types of aggression - someone trying to drag you off somewhere for example. It won't fix someone with a gun to your head, but might discourage someone trying to overpower you with strength and force.
I also really appreciated ramkitten's answer. I took a seminar on protecting yourself from rape when I was in college, and we were highly encouraged to make ourselves "people" to the attacker - to talk about our parents and siblings, to ask about the attacker's family members, particularly females, to use our own names (ie, "My mother always said, "Now, Katie, you have to..") to try to get our attacker to see us as more than an object, things of that nature. I don't know how successful that approach would be, but it seemed to make sense for some situations.

M$AND EXERCISE. IT MAY BE A LITTLE LATE FOR ME, HOWEVER.
ONE'S DEMEANOR AND PURPOSEFUL ATTITUDE IS A VERY POWERFUL SIGNAL TO THE REALLY WEAK PERSONALITY WHO PREYS UPON OTHERS. HUMANIZING YOURSELF AND ESPECIALLY THE AGGRESSOR IS THE SUGGESTION I REALLY LIKED. I HAVE DONE THIS IN AN ARGUMENT. IT SEEMS TO FLIP HIS MIND OUT OF WHATEVER PSYCO-FANTACY IS DRIVING THIS BEHAVIOR.
IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO RECOGNIZE A PROBLEM TO BEGIN WITH, RUN LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL!
A MOVING AND WEAVING TARGET IS VERY HARD TO HIT WITH A BULLET. THE HAND ALARM AND SCREAMING IS FANTASTIC. HE DOES'T EXPECT TO BE EXPOSED AND EASILY CAUGHT. MAKE A CRAZY FOOL OUT OF YOURSELF OR BE CARRIED AWAY, NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN.

That only works if someone is clear minded.
Re: de-escalation ... For sure, there's usually no reasoning with the insane; although sometimes they can be talked down (calmed, distracted) for long enough for another method of subduing or disarming them to work. But avoidance and personal alarms can still be applied. Combined with martial arts skills and KatKenig's suggestions (pepper spray, maybe even a taser ... although I don't know the rules for obtaining and carrying those), there's definitely a lot people can do to protect themselves without using a gun.
I agree, there is no reasoning with the clinically insane or someone under the influence of psychedelic narcotics / drugs.
Still a helpful answer tho :)
