In addition to the various forms of martial arts, here are three other non-violent methods of self defense:

De-escalation, which is verbal self defense also known as "verbal Judo." It basically means to prevent, de-escalate, or end an attempted assault by using ones voice, tone and body language with a number of learned techniques.

Avoidance, which means being aware of and avoiding potentially dangerous situations. It also means removing at least one of the elements that makes violence possible--desire, distance, and decision.

And personal alarms. This is a way to practice passive self defense. A personal alarm is a small, hand-held device that makes a loud, high pitched noise to deter attackers because the noise will draw the attention of passersby.

That only works if someone is clear minded.

Re: de-escalation ... For sure, there's usually no reasoning with the insane; although sometimes they can be talked down (calmed, distracted) for long enough for another method of subduing or disarming them to work. But avoidance and personal alarms can still be applied. Combined with martial arts skills and KatKenig's suggestions (pepper spray, maybe even a taser ... although I don't know the rules for obtaining and carrying those), there's definitely a lot people can do to protect themselves without using a gun.

I agree, there is no reasoning with the clinically insane or someone under the influence of psychedelic narcotics / drugs.
Still a helpful answer tho :)

Any martial arts really. I have trained in 3 different types of martial arts and boxing. I would be more comfortable with a bo staff then a firearm.

I would go with BJJ, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Jeet Kune Do, Tae Kwon Do, Ju-jitsu. I have done the JKD and JJ on my own (reading and practicing the movements). Tae Kwon Do I did for about 2 years.

The boxing I did as part of a cop program.

Being my size though I rarely get into fights (6' 300lb more muscle then fat). I have some crazy Red neck in me mixed with Italian :p

I've taken jiujistu , taikwondo , judo and advanced sword training . But my favorite was american freestyle which i only took for a year and then moved on to mma.

All wonderful sports. I'm a green belt in tai, and hold a second degree blackbelt in judo & hope one day to reach grand master and get my red belt in either.

I commend you for suggesting braz/bjj thats using your head :P ;) ;)

For beginners i recommend krav maga for hand V, weapon defense.

When I worked in Law Enforcement, we went through training called Powerpoint Pressure Tactics. It was similar to martial arts, but the emphasis was on disabling the agressor (not completely incapacitating) since we were in a law enforcement role. It involves using your arms and/or legs to strike certain areas of the body that are dense with nerves or critical arteries/veins. For example: the carotid artery/jugular vein carry blood from/to the head, and run from the base of the neck up to the brain. By using the bony part of your forearms, you can strike down on both sides of the base of the neck (where it begins to curve) and the subject will drop straight to the ground. This is because you "pinched" the artery/vein which prevented oxygenated blood from reaching the brain thereby temporarily 'stunning" the person. The inside of the thigh also has two very sensitive pressure points: the femoral artery/vein. The best part is that you do NOT have to be strong to inflict pain - make sure the "shoelace" part of your foot makes contact with the inner thigh (higher is better) and you're sure to win. If the other person is too close for either of those, you can always use your fingers or thumbs to apply pressure anywhere behind the jaw bone (lower mandible) - very delicate tissue/fiber!

P.S. I've had all three of these tactics used on me during class to demonstrate effectiveness. It works!

Well, if he was home, my number one method of defense would be to hide behind my husband. He's six and a half feet tall. He's also semi practiced in some martial arts. And he collects and practices with his swords. The hiding isn't violent, but the swords have a big potential to be.

I'm a fan of the taser, personally. I also like pepper spray, although it's illegal for me to carry here in Canada.

If it's possible, passive resistance is even better, though that would only work on certain types of aggression - someone trying to drag you off somewhere for example. It won't fix someone with a gun to your head, but might discourage someone trying to overpower you with strength and force.

I also really appreciated ramkitten's answer. I took a seminar on protecting yourself from rape when I was in college, and we were highly encouraged to make ourselves "people" to the attacker - to talk about our parents and siblings, to ask about the attacker's family members, particularly females, to use our own names (ie, "My mother always said, "Now, Katie, you have to..") to try to get our attacker to see us as more than an object, things of that nature. I don't know how successful that approach would be, but it seemed to make sense for some situations.

ALL OF THE ANSWERS WERE GREAT. MARTIAL ARTS IS A FANTASTIC PURSUIT FOR SELF-DEFENSE
AND EXERCISE. IT MAY BE A LITTLE LATE FOR ME, HOWEVER.

ONE'S DEMEANOR AND PURPOSEFUL ATTITUDE IS A VERY POWERFUL SIGNAL TO THE REALLY WEAK PERSONALITY WHO PREYS UPON OTHERS. HUMANIZING YOURSELF AND ESPECIALLY THE AGGRESSOR IS THE SUGGESTION I REALLY LIKED. I HAVE DONE THIS IN AN ARGUMENT. IT SEEMS TO FLIP HIS MIND OUT OF WHATEVER PSYCO-FANTACY IS DRIVING THIS BEHAVIOR.

IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO RECOGNIZE A PROBLEM TO BEGIN WITH, RUN LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL!
A MOVING AND WEAVING TARGET IS VERY HARD TO HIT WITH A BULLET. THE HAND ALARM AND SCREAMING IS FANTASTIC. HE DOES'T EXPECT TO BE EXPOSED AND EASILY CAUGHT. MAKE A CRAZY FOOL OUT OF YOURSELF OR BE CARRIED AWAY, NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN.
