When adopting a dog, not a puppy, how do you house train them?

Obedience training is the foundation for establishing a better relationship between you and your dog. Obedience training helps establish the owner in the role of "pack leader". Obedience will lay down clear behavior guidelines that your dog can follow. A well-behaved, obedient dog is more than just a pet of pride. The difference lies largely in the training, and good training can save a dog's life.

These articles will give you tips about how to best train your dog.

Repetition, consistency, practice and correction are what it takes to train a dog to be happy and responsive. If you follow these simple steps you will find that your puppy can grow into an obedient well-adjusted dog.

Its difficult to expect a young dog or puppy to hold it's urine or movements for more than a few hours. After all, how would you feel if your were chained to your favorite recliner and not able to relieve yourself when the urge came. This provides an opportunity to familiarizing the puppy with going out and going to the bathroom, since one can let the dog out every hour or so.

Be sure to create "KEY Word" that the dog will recognize each time they are let outside. The obvious one that I use is "Outside!" everytime I let the puppy out. You will be amazed at how quickly they catch on to key words. My puppies grasped the outside keyword along with "upstairs" and "whose here". Each time I now excitedly yell "Outside!" the dogs come running.

Monitoring when the dog eats and how much it is drinking is also beneficial, since most dogs will have an urge to relieve themselves shortly after. Puppies will tend to eat and drink alot since their energy requirments are quite high, so visits outside should be often.

Many people use the crate training method. It uses their instincts as a den animal. The crate is your dog's den and dogs don't like to soil their dens.

I have actually used it and it works very well.

Everything unwirklich said, plus:

If the dog does have an accident and he poops or pees inside your home, then be sure to clean the area very well and use something that will take the scent away from the area. Otherwise, if you leave the scent there the dog will be drawn to it like a magnet the next time he has to go! We have had success with drying the pee up by rubbing a rag in it for a few minutes, and then spraying the area liberally with Spray and Wash. We let the Spray and Wash sink in for a few minutes, and then rub vigorously with a clean rag for a few minutes. This cleans pet vomit really well, too.

Older dogs are hard to potty train it takes a long time. I'd begin by observing cues from the dog that indicate they are fixing to go potty. Searching around, sniffy spots, things like that. Any time the dog does this.. take it to where you want it to go potty and don't let it leave until it goes. Once it does praise it. I wouldn't punish the dog for mistakes until you had established a bond and had been using this praise system for awhile. When that times comes whenever the dog does potty in the house. Take to the mess and bring it's face to the mess, but don't rub it in it. Say no in a firm authoritative voice and pull on the dogs scruff. In the wild wolves will bite the scruff of other wolves when they disobey the pack leader, this a natural yet unharmful form of discipline. Next take the dog to where he/she should potty and make them stay there for awhile, if the dog pooped also move the poop to the appropriate location. (That last bit does work better with cats, but I've seen it work with dogs.)
