What are some jobs, other than teaching, that I'd be qualified for with an education degree?

I was "laid off" from my teaching position a couple months ago, and I haven't had much luck finding a replacement. Most schools here start in a week or 2 and seem to be on an unofficial hiring freeze. So, I am looking for a good back-up plan, besides substitute teaching, which I do not want to do.

I really have no formal work experience other than childcare, but I am proficient in several areas (computers/technology, writing, etc.). Any ideas for other jobs that I could be considered for? Ideally, I would relocate to find a teaching job, but that is not possible right now.

I live in western Tennessee, so if you happen to find any specific jobs that you think I'd be interested in/qualified for, I'll tip you extra. :)

You'd be qualified for many things, but I'm not sure if any of them are more likely to be hiring at the moment than teaching.

There are lots of jobs that can be done by "any good graduate", where the degree just shows that you are intelligent, reasonably organised and reasonably hard working. (i.e. Have what it takes to get a degree).

They would include things like entry level management, sales, HR, project coordination, event management, government jobs, entry level software development, tech support or systems analyst roles. For example many a corporation doesn't really care much what your degree was when they are hiring for their graduate training schemes in management or IT.

As a teacher (and as the person I know you to be) you have a pretty good combination of skills - you are very numerate and tech literate, you can communicate well, and you have good social skills. All very desirable in most organisations, and not that common to find all in one person.

If you want to stay close to teaching you could look at other types of training. Things like tech training, management training, team building etc. And also other organisations that work with young people. That could range from non-profits to children's publishers to police.

Having said all that... from what I have read from you, you have a passion for teaching. So I wouldn't give up on that just yet, and look at that as still what your long-term career will be. i.e. What you are looking for now is an interim job until you can get back to teaching.

If that's what you want to do, it'll have an influence on what you go for and how you sell yourself.

Best of luck!

You can tutor by putting an ad in the local paper or look at a tutoring agency. Most tutoring agencies want to hire experienced teachers.

Beside tutoring or daycare you could look into a position at a musuem, zoo, or other place that has educational tours. They often hire teachers because they are looking for people to give information to larger groups and kids on class trips.

There's a job posted at the Knoxville Zoo for their education department. You can have a look at the posting here:
http://www.knoxville-zoo.org/employment.htm

Not sure if that's too far for you though

Another option is to look at teaching adult education classes. You could also look into teaching at private schools.

Good luck in your search!

Well you might want to freelance for a bit, check out this site:
http://freelanceswitch.com/finding/the-monster-list-of-freelancing-job-sites/
you will find many opportunities here.
This is definitely not the best way to make money but it is a good way to get a half decent cash flow while you are not at work.
Corporate training sounds good, tutoring could be your next step as you still have contacts in the school you worked with and if you have enough computer skills to develop your own website it will make you look more professional and will give you more exposure.
My advice would be to go on job hunting sites, enter your area, and see what is available, it will give you a good idea of what you may be able to find.
Write down all your abilities on a piece of paper, and your degrees and work experience, and then compare it with available jobs.
Lastly you can maybe check your school to see if positions such as librarian are available.
I hope this helps!
cheers

Hi @demanda, I'm sure there are many things you can do besides teaching. I know teachers who left the field and started to do other things that they enjoyed and were qualified to do. You won't need a degree in many of these areas. If you want, you can also be a teacher's assistant or a full time tutor to some home schoolers, yet that's usually a harder job to obtain.

Here are some ideas:

Librarian or Bookseller: Try a book store a library, as teachers are usually book lovers, there is something for you to read or learn in this field.

City Tour Guide: which is similar to a teacher, yet you're educating the visitors of Tennessee about the state, or the city. Sometimes there are tourist attractions that require tour guides.

Researcher: There are plenty of jobs that require researchers, and there might be something for you to research.

Human Resources: Many corporations require people to

Corporate Training: Like a teacher, yet you will be training people at corporations.

Rental Car Company Management Training: There are great opportunities at rental car companies, and they have training programs to become a manager.

Event Coordinator: Manage and create events

Political Correspondent: You will work with politicians

Customer Service Representative: Lots of companies need customer service reps

Sales Rep or Account Executive: You can sell something

Retail Store Sales: Selling clothing or products in retail store

Pharmaceutical Sales: Lots of doctors need drugs for their patients

Assistant Sports Coach: If you know a sport, coach a sport in college.

Dog Walker or Pet Sitter: Take care of pets and walk the dog.

Pet Groomer: If you like dogs and cats, why not groom them?

Coffee Shop: You can be a barista and work your way up to being a store manager.

Hope this helps!

Best of luck!

I know how you feel--I am a teacher here in California and go through this same thing every year or two! I am a single mom and want to stay where I am, close to family and my children's friends, so relocation is not an option for me either. I would suggest combining your experience with the various skills and knowledge you have and maybe doing some different things like: teaching workshops at the local community center, sign up on www.weblogsinc and get paid to blog, check out some of the job sites at Teacher-to-Teacher and Mediabistro.com. Hope for the best for you and your family!

Hi @demanda,

I'm not in the education field, but my sister is and I know it's a highly under-appreciated field these days.

I'm living in Japan and I am constantly asked to teach English (as a second language) by many of the people I meet here.

In many cases, the potential student's level of English is already quite good, they just need to work on pronunciation and less common phrases.

I have been helping one person that is a PR representative for some large international businesses. The corrections are usually to very simple grammatical mistakes common to a non-native speaker.

I'm not sure of the best way to find a job in this area, but I believe that there are opportunities out there where you can help people with English from your home (video conferencing, email correction, etc.)

Here is a google search that might help get you started.

Hope that helps!

You can apply for a Teacher Assistant position. There are usually a lot of these positions available and you would have not trouble getting hired with a teaching degree. It won't pay as much as a lead teacher, but it's a way of getting in the door at least. This job is similar to being a teacher, just with less responsibilities.

demanda,

you said western tennessee, but that covers a big area. i found two listings in Memphis for Learning Care Group.

i'm not sure of your exact qualifications, but even if you don't qualify for the position they have listed, if you are close enough to memphis, i'd still contact them and see if they have any unadvertised positions.

you have child care experience, obviously love children since you chose to be a teacher, and you ARE a teacher... seems like this would be a great company for you to work for. they had listings in other areas too, so even if you are too far for the memphis facility, they might have one in your area.

the two listings are below...

Have you consider a corporate training position? Focus your resume on the skills you've developed while teaching, and then target specific companies in your area.

There are also schools that provide distance learning, using qualified teachers around the country. My son is currently taking classes through Laurel Springs School. They are based in Ojai California, but he has one teacher in Virginia and one from California. He's in Maine. That might help you keep your hand in the teaching game while you ponder your options.

Good luck!

Hi @demanda! I found some alternative jobs that you can apply for educators.
These are:

1. Workshop/Trainer for teachers - You can apply as workshop trainers since there are many companies that arrange workshops for schools who employ many trainers and education consultants. If you market yourself and your skills to existing companies, you can save a lot of legwork and jump start your career in this field, Corporations train their workers and if you will become a corporate trainer you could put your teaching skills to good use.

2. Being part of the sales team of a national education company. The salesmen does a good job of presenting the education material selection to a committee of teachers.

3. Another good option is in curriculum development that you could excel in. Many curriculum companies have offices in more than one major city in the U.S.

4. Private tutoring could be another perfect career since teachers are not allowed to tutor students for pay in most states. Teachers who are working in the classroom are always looking for good tutors and recommending a former teach as a tutor to their students.

5. If you are fond of writing you can start now and become a writer and get published. It depends on your talents and you can work out towards publishing your articles, a resource book for teachers or you can write a children's book.
