In my opinion, many reptiles should only be kept by experts. Larger snakes and lizards can be dangerous in the hands of a novice, both to their owner(s) and the public. Exotic animals like monkeys, apes and wild cats should only be kept by experts but aren’t meant to be kept as pets at all.
There are various dog breeds that are high-maintenance, depending on your definition of high-maintenance. My definition includes any dog that needs to be groomed on a regular basis as that’s not something I have the time for. Other people think dogs that require frequent, lengthy exercise are high-maintenance.
High-energy breeds (require frequent exercise and training):
Husky
German Shepherds
Border Collies
Excessive shedders and/or dogs that need frequent hair cuts:
Old English Sheepdog
Poodles and poodle crosses
Shih Tzu
Pomeranians
Special health concerns:
Shar Pei – wrinkled skin around the face can hold bacteria and cause infections. Cherry eyes and in-turned eyelids may cause problems and require surgery.
Rhodesian Ridgeback – spine abnormalities

Other high energy dogs, in my experience, include Boxers, Labradors, Retrievers and other dogs in the AKC’s working group.
English bulldogs tend to have skin issues.
Giant breed dogs tend to have bone and joint problems, are prone to bloat and have short lives due to their giant size.
