What are some great ways to live a healthier life?

Tip for best answer: M$0.10
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi- your question is a bit broad, and not knowing your health status, age, and current lifestyle is somewhat limiting. However, I will provide a general list of ways to live healthy:

1. If you use tobacco products, quit. But prior to quitting, seek out a supportive quit smoking program to help you be more successful.

2. Eat 5-7 servings of fresh produce daily. Know what a serving size is, and get a variety of colors daily (e.g., carrots, spinach, tomatoes). Fruit is full of nutrients and water, so if you don't have metabolic issues (such as metabolic syndrome or diabetes) include 2-3 servings daily of FRESH fruit. Know the produce that is most important to eat organic. http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2010/06/01/dirty-dozen-produce-carries-more-pesticide-residue-group-says/?iref=allsearch

3. Get adequate protein in your diet, from a variety of sources. Eat wild game whenever possible (elk, venison, moose, caribou are wonderful and low fat). If consuming beef, go for the natural or organic beef. Avoid "mass-produced " beef or poultry. Fish is wonderful, but try to eat wild caught fish. Some farmed fish is higher in contaminants and lower in nutrients. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/food/food-safety/animal-feed-and-food/animal-feed-and-the-food-supply-105/seafood-farmed-vs-wild/index.htm

4. if you haven't yet seen the documentary "Food, Inc, " watch it! It will firm up your commitment to a healthier eating.

5. Avoid processed foods They are high salt, high preservative, and low nutrient. Get rid of the canned goods and box foods (Hamburger Helper type foods, frozen pizzas, etc.).

6. Find out your Body Mass Index score, and seek guidance from an exercise professional or health provider to discuss the best exercise program for you, then do it! http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

7. Consider vitamin supplements. Consult with your health provider first. There is increasing evidence that serum D is low in many people, especially those that live at northern latitudes. Low vitamin D has been linked as a risk factor for osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and lowered immunity. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements help lower high cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease.

8. If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation. Red wine is associated with health benefits, but consuming large amounts of alcohol is linked to cancers. If you have or suspect an alcohol problem, seek help.

9. Reduce stress in your life. Unplug from the world when you can-- literally. Take a vacation form your smart Phone, laptop, pager, etc. Go for a hike, bike ride, run, or walk through a local botanical garden. Whatever works for you. If you don't know how, seek counseling to figure out how to de-stress your life. It can be done!

10 Good luck. You will appreciate your efforts.
