What are some great hole-in-wall restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona?

Every city has them – those little restaurants that all of the natives know about and none of the tourists can find. I prefer those smaller restaurants over bigger chains because it gives you a chance to experience the city through these eyes of a native. I definitely want to try out some of these places and experience what makes them special. I don’t want to visit any larger chains, but the smaller mom-and-pop places. Any and all local favorite Phoenix, Arizona restaurants would be helpful I have no preference as far as type of food – if I have time, I’ll try them all!

This may be stretching the "hole in the wall" concept, it is a very small chain with half a dozen locations in Arizona and one in Phoenix, but my wife and I loved Oregano's when we were out there. We ate there several times and loved it.

Try the :
Pablo Picasso salad
Boom Dip
Pizza and sandwiches were great
Cookie desserts are fantastic

Have fun!

Oh, yeah. Great pizza place! (6 of the 8 locations are sprinkled around the Phoenix metro area, btw.)

True hole in the wall great pizza places: Florencia (36th St. and Ray, Phoenix) and a place - I'm blanking on the name - at 40th St. and Indian School (SW corner) in Phoenix.

I really like Green Vegetarian Restaurant in Tempe, it's a bit of a hole in the wall but absolutely delicious.

Since Dave got me in the sushi state of mind, I'll suggest Sushi Ken, down on Chandler Blvd in the Ahwatukee area. Non-pretentious, good prices, great sushi - we go there regularly.

Barrio Cafe (16th St and Thomas), in Phx isn't a "hole in the wall", as in "never heard of it". They have received oodles of well-deserved attention, even though the location and the external appearance might fool ya. Creative, high end Mexican food that'll keep you coming back for more!
