I think cupcake wedding cakes can be a nice option. You have most of the choices you'd have in a regular cake and, as a bonus, a slide does not have to be manually cut for each guest (they're just handed a cupcake instead).

Many complicated setups are available that make a cupcake cake look more or less like a regular cake, with the cupcakes themselves making up multiple layers of the design. Most of the creations that I've seen feature a small non-cupcake cake on the very top, with each subsequent layer below comprised of cupcakes.

I'd say they're a little more informal or whimsical than a traditional wedding cake, but on the other hand, that's just what many people are looking for. Remember that you can also make it as large or as tall as you want!

I think you can become very creative if you do not want a "traditional' wedding cake. Think about what both of you enjoy and maybe have a theme cake, with some aspects featuring your interests and the other featuring your future spouse's interest. Perhaps this could be done by layers or have a large base with a few smaller layers on top side by side, each featuring different designs. There is so much you can do. You can have the traditional buttercream frosting or use the fondant, or maybe you prefer a whipped cream type of icing. It's your special day so have it created exactly as you want.

As far as making it afforadable, if you have a friend that is a cake decorator, that would be ideal. I am sure a friend would make your cake on your special day at a very affordable price. If you don't have that luxury or knowing someone personally that decorates cakes, you have to search online for someone in your area that makes the cheapest cakes, but at the same time will do what you want.
