What are some good ways to deal with anxiety?

Tip for best answer: M$0.36
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

One of the best starting points to dealing with anxiety is to identify the cause. Is it job related, a relationship, finances, ? This self-analyzing task is often very difficult, but must be honestly approached. It can be something as simple as caffeine or as complicated as loss of a loved one. Once the cause of anxiety is identified, the next step - how to treat the problem. Symptoms of anxiety (insomnia, depression, diffifulty concentrating, etc.) are effects not causes.

Here are a few suggestions which may help with anxiety:

Exercise - both aerobic and non-aerobic. Walking, jogging are great. Yoga and similar relaxation techniques are very helpful.

Socialize with neighbors and friends. Volunteer in the community to help others. An active mind is a healthy mind.

Start a journal and write down your feelings when an anxiety attack occurs.

Avoid or limit caffeine. Caffeine is in tea, cola, chocolate, - and so many other items, including some over-the-counter medications. Read labels.

Try deep breathing exercises and/or meditation.

Find new hobbies that inspire relaxation - painting, drawing, writing, puzzles, music.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the most common form of treatment used by psychologists to help people overcome anxiety. In serious cases of anxiety, this type of treatment is used to help condition the person to overcome unreasonable fears related to stress-causing events.

Sometimes anxiety treatment is combined with training in the practice of mindfulness meditation to help one become less reactive to stress triggers and more at ease with themselves. The referenced link on anxiety treatment has this practice listed as a recommendation as well as many other suggestions.

I will not repeat the other person's answers but I would like to reinforce a couple of suggestions, like journaling so you can take a more objective view of your reaction to stress triggers and following a good diet that does not have any stimulants like coffee.
