What are some good vacation ideas when you have zero dollars to spend?

I have a week's worth of vacation time built up at work I need to take in the next three months. It's not optional to get paid for that time and work through it - my employer REQUIRES that we take the time off.

Since my financial situation can be best described as "bled dry", what are some good, but very cheap (preferably FREE) things I can do during the forced vacation time?

FYI: I'm in the Chicago metro area, but most "tourist" destinations are really not an option unless they have a "free admission day". I also would rather not operate my vehicle during that time frame. Multiple forms of public transportation ARE available to me near where I live to all other points in the city. I'm also planning on updating my resume & list of accomplishments anyway, but that certainly won't take 5 days to do.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hey @maxzhichao

Check out this website: chicagofree.info. It looks like they have some great ideas for low cost (or free) vacation. As I am not from the area, you might need to check if the places and events are suitable for your situation (i.e. not tourist destinations and close to your home).

Some ideas that I found from the above site are:
Night of Free Theater during October 2009.

For Sunday, there is an Apple Long Grove Festival

Other kids and family friendly categories are available here

I would also suggest searching in Google using keywords: staycation Chicago (replace Chicago with the exact area where you live).

Finally, have you checked your local library. They might have story telling time (if you have young children), local activities (such as visiting local historic places), book club etc.

Have you thought about volunteering, Max?

For me, a vacation is about returning to work refreshed and feeling good. You may be shocked how effective helping other people is.

Here are some good places to start looking:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=chicago+voulenteer&fb=1&gl=ca&hq=voulenteer&hnear=chicago&view=text&ei=3avISqbsCZHqsQOAmayiBQ&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=more-results&resnum=1

A quick call telling these folks that you have a free week and can do anything they need help with may result in a match. The numbers at local food banks are way up right now and one of the ones in your area may need help stuffing boxes or otherwise helping out.

Not all activities in world cost
* You can stay at home doing some household work helping people around you in the house.
*you can spend some good times with old frnds you always wanted to be with.
*you can read some of your fav novels books journals.you can browse through newspapers for current issues of attention.
*you can watch some of your loved moives at home.
*spend some time with your love.
*socialise on sites like orkut facebook twitter etc.
at the end its not a big boredom staying at home.afterall you don get time to be home n working days....may be the best thing could be you can have ods of sleep.

Vacation on the couch. On Sunday's I watch Football and Baseball, play my video games, and watch Sunday night programming on HBO. Now that is a pretty sweet day off, and I don't spend any money. I wouldn't recommend to do that everyday though. Maybe you can clean, and do stuff around the house that you couldn't when you are working everyday. Anyway, you should enjoy your time off, do stuff you want to do.

Do Mahalo and gain some money, write a novel or diary or blogs, read jokes online, cook for yourself (you have to spend money for food anyway), help some friends.
