1. Use a backing that works with the quilt top if both will be visible during use, in a bed quilt for instance.
2. Choose a backing with an interesting motif and then quilt from the back, along the printed lines, to transfer the design to the front.
3. A busy backing hides less-than-perfect quilting stitches.
4. Use the same quality fabric for your backing as you did for your top.
5. Always remove the selvedge from the fabric.
