What are some good ideas, when trying to cut back on fast food?

I think everyone has done it, run out of things to eat in the house, so instead of going to the grocery store, you go ahead and just go to a fast food place. My wife and I are guilty of this but are trying to live healthier lives. Any tips, tricks, or suggestions for how to not fall back on this?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I am guilty of this because town is so far away. You have to watch what you purchase for quick items around the house as well, because most are not healthy. Something that I have found is handy to do is to prepare some items in advance. I fix things like lasagna, chicken and dumplings, vegetable soup and pinto beans. I always have some left over so I can eat on it a few days. Of course, there are only two people at my house, so it goes a long ways.

There are also items that we buy a few and toss them in the freezer. I usually keep a package of turkey sandwich meat in the freezer for times when I don't have time to prepare anything. Things like this and something like a large jar of peanut butter should be kept on hand. If you run out of anything else, you can at least have turkey and peanut butter. Keeping some other non perishable items should help.

Something else that I have found helpful is to just get a small item to go on the way to the grocery when there just doesn't seem to be anything around the house. Do this, rather than pigging out and going back home. If you eat something very light, you will have eaten enough, but not too much to keep from going to the grocery store and stocking up. I also recommend planning meals ahead of time and buying enough to make it through the week. You should plan ahead and buy ample food plus a bit more, but not too much more.

I think planning ahead helps people save time and money. It also prevents the waste of food.

I think if we gradually cut back it will seem easier to start eating healthy more often. The reason I say "we" is because I mean me too. I think the problem is not only are fast food restaurants nice and close and conveniently located, but some of us have both the husband and wife working. We need time for the kids, time to clean the house and when all that is done we have run out of time. Grabbing fast food is not only delicious (hehe) but FAST. By the time you prep a meal, serve it, eat it, clean up and then do dishes, you wasted 2 hours. Boy, I think I just came up with a load of excuses of why I probably wont give up the fast food. HOWEVER, down the road when I am rich (he he he), I seriously do want to cut back on fast food. I feel better when I cook healthy meals.
