What are some good ideas for a easy, beginner documentary?

Looking for ideas for an easy documentary for somebody who's never made one before. I have one, maybe two cameras and no assistants. Ideas? Preferably something outside?
Tip for best answer: M$0.30
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I would guess your first go should be a subject that is near to hand and easily accessible, and as much a learning experience for you in documentary making as anything else. Also it might as well be something that interests you. I would imagine first time round the process itself will be challenging, so it's probably better if the subject itself is not so challenging.

I'd look around your neighborhood and think about your interests, and see what comes to mind.

Some ideas, based on me and my neighborhood...

- A documentary profile of the area
- A documentary on the lives of a connected set of people, e.g. interviews and footage of the lives of people in your street, the regulars at the bar you go to, or whatever
- A documentary covering some local event... sports match... celebrity visit... local election etc

If it was me, I might cover the local tennis scene. Things like...

- Follow a class of beginners as they learn
- Interview the coaches
- Look behind the scenes on how things run
- Show the lives of the people when they're not playing
- Cover the local competition

How about the life of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle?
You could go to the factory, film one being built, follow it to the dealership and then find out who it goes to and then follow them around for a while, find out what motivated them to buy it, what a Harley means to them etc... you could even do three bikes if you had the means...

Just throwing it our there. I always wonder about stuff like that - would it go to a hardcore biker? Maybe a lawyer? Who knows the destiny of a bike...

A Harley may be tricky, I think the asker lives in Canada, but that's a cool idea in general.

But you could find something made locally, and follow its life.

Right? After I answered this, and while I was driving around later, I thought to myself that Harleys were awfully specific (although still a cool idea). I had the same thought - maybe he could pick somethnig and then follow the life of it. Could be interesting.
