You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Upset stomach/indigestion - In medical terminology also known as heartburn or dyspepsia is the impaired gastric function as a cause of some disorder in the stomach. The signs and symptoms could include nausea, vomiting, burning epigastric pain, belching or gaseous eructation. The upset stomach could be due to GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease (black-flow of acid contents of the stomach through the esophagus to the back of the throat).

Remedy - Eat several smaller meals during the day. Lie down only after 3-4 hours of eating. Elevate the head of the bed. Acid neutralizing drugs. Plenty of fluids and rest.

Foods for an upset stomach. Appetite - When you have nausea, vomiting, pain or diarrhea, you lose your appetite and will to eat. Take sips of water or suck on ice chips. Once the patient feels better, you can restart giving bland foods like banana, toast rice and applesauce.

(A) BRAT diet - acronym for:
1. Bananas
2. Rice
3. Applesauce
4. Toast

It consists of low-fiber foods and is easy to digest and tolerate until recovery is achieved.

(B) BRATY diet - an acronym for:
1. Bananas
2. Rice
3. Applesauce
4. Toast
5. Yogurt

(C) BRATT diet - an acronym for:
1. Bananas
2. Rice
3. Applesauce
4. Tea
5. Toast

Even if the pain, diarrhea and nausea ease, stick to the bland foods for a few days.

Avoid certain foods:
1. Desserts
2. Greasy or spicy foods
3. Milk and milk-based products
4. Fruits and vegetables like onions, garlic, tomatoes, raisins or figs and citrus fruits like oranges and pineapples.
5. Alcohol and caffeine.

The pediatricians recommend young kids to restart a normal diet as the bland foods are not rich in nutrients. They should take recommended fruits, vegetables, yogurt and carbohydrates. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Consult a physician if the diarrhea does not resolve even after three days or a body temperature of 102 degrees or high or a decrease in urine output.
