My absolute favorite addition to a cheese board is Cheesecake and Muscat, a dessert wine (also called Moscatel or Muscatel). It is a unique addition, unexpected, and delicious!!! It's also fabulous garnished with a little candied ginger, or even a little blue cheese and cracked black pepper! Yes, it is delicious with cheesecake and Muscat. A bite of a rich high quality cheesecake and a sip of Muscat is perfection. Mmm...

thats an idea I hadn't thought of before. MrsPsionandy likes Moscatel so I'll pick up a bottle and try it with some cheesecake, ginger and either some stilton or a danish blue..

If it works I'll give it a go at the dinner party. This is going to be fun.

White wines match best with soft cheeses and stronger flavors.
Red wines match best with hard cheeses and milder flavors.
Fruity and sweet white wines (not dry) and dessert wines work best with a wider range of cheeses.
The more pungent the cheese you choose, the sweeter the wine should be.

Thanks... its really helpful to know the general rules. Once you know the principles it takes away some of the guess work.

Thats also a really helpful link with some great suggestions. I think I'm going to try out some combinations and 'audition' them before the party... :)

I found a site for butter and cheese pairings.

http://butterandcheese.net/cheeseWinePairing.html

They even give sample cheeseboards, the one below sounds fantastic!

New England Cheese Board
Bonne Bouche or Coupole
Bijou
Chevre - plain, herb or pepper
Cheddar 12 months
Blue Cheese
Washed Rind
Fromage Blanc

This site speaks in more general terms to help you match

• White wines match best with soft cheeses and stronger flavors.
• Red wines match best with hard cheeses and milder flavors.
• Fruity and sweet white wines (not dry) and dessert wines work best with a wider range of cheeses.

Have fun!
