What are some good books to read for those about to open a business?

If someone has a degree and is ready to open a business of their own, what books can provide advice before he or she begins? Which books can provide an insight into many real-world lessons that cannot really be taught in a text book? Similarly, are there any such books that are overrated and not worth the trouble?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I love this book: Start Small, Finish Big - by Fred DeLuca.
He shares stories of companies we all know, and how they started.

Every business owner should read the E-Myth before setting out to start their own business. It helps you get into the mentality of how to work yourself out of your business from the start.

Hi Angie,

There are literally 1000s of books to choose from, all pretty much the same. My recommendation if you looking for books is 1) get something specific to your country 2) don't get fooled by writing a business plan in a day, it can takes weeks to gather the information you need, and 3) if possible, find a book specific to your type of business.

Inc.com has a very impressive knowledge based of tips, tools and info for people starting up, so check it out, definitely recommend it.

The ideal way to do it right straight away, while learning in the process, is enlisting the help of a business coach to teach you the things you need to know specific to your business, your vision, and your goals. Start-ups and small businesses we have helped in this way have been able to get their businesses started faster, and more profitable. Remember most coaches are former senior executives and successful business owners that will be able to bring a wealth of knowledge to the table.

Hi Angie,

I agree with Denis. Tap into the brain power of the experts who've -been there - done that - learned a lot of valuable things along the way.

On that note, I’d recommend my book as a resource, 'OutSell Yourself: Go from Hello to Sold with Ethical Business & Sales Techniques'. I've owned three companies & taught & coach hundreds of professionals to develop their business.

Here's my final comment, "make a plan and go for it!”

I've read about 60 business related books this year and they are NOT all the same. Some of them are bad, but some are very good.

I enjoyed E-Myth Revisited though. It could be helpful for some people.
