In New York City they make Columbus Day a variety of Italian American day and have a big parade. Here in New Orleans we use St Joseph's Day as the Italian American day and the parades are more fun than the NY style.
Other than going to the parade, if you live near one, there's not much to do. Some stores have sales if you like shopping.
It should be remembered that Columbus was not a very nice person, and the Spanish that he sailed for were even worse. Of course our country would not exist were it not for the intrepid European explorers; but, I'd rather see one of the others picked out for a "day".
