The Desert Botanical Garden is in Phoenix. The Garden is situated on 145 acres of land with over 50,000 plant displays and is dedicated to understanding and preserving the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert. It is one of the few botanical gardens that have also been designated as a museum. Naturally, because it is a desert location, most of the more notable plants around the Phoenix area are the cacti. The saguaros, barrel cacti, and prickly pears contribute to the uniqueness of the Arizona desert scenery. The cacti, which in themselves are somewhat inhospitable, produce a number of beautiful, different colored flowers. They obviously are not the kind of flower that a person would pick from their garden for a table display but they provide hours of enjoyment by attracting Arizona wildlife like hummingbirds, quail, and butterflies. The jumping cholla cactus, also indigenous to Phoenix, is better admired from afar. The jumping cholla is covered with sharp thorns that seem to "jump" out at unwary passersby.
