What are some cool experiments that can be done with microwaves?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Here are a few, but please be extremely careful if you try any of them. Follow any instructions carefully, and have a fire-extinguisher nearby just in case.

  1. Grape Plasma- This involves superheating gas in a microwave using grapes to start the arc. All you need are grapes, a knife, and a microwave.

    2. Expanding Peeps: This involves microwaving marshmallow peeps, which causes them to expand.

    3. Edible chemistry experiment, using a microwave.

    4. Ivory soap experiment: Demonstration of expanding water vapor and air in a bar of soap in the microwave

As you know, playing with microwave ovens could be hazardous to your health, and I recommend you proceed at your OWN RISK! Don't try any of this at home Although some experiments may be cool, some can be dangerous if you don't take the proper precautions. I recommend you don't take a bag of popcorn and overheat in the microwave, because you will be regretting it later on! I know, I've done it before, and even put the popcorn and pressed the popcorn button, and POOF, the bag almost exploded, the popcorn was burnt, and I must say, it didn't taste too good at all.

One experiment I saw online is shown below, and remember this is at your OWN RISK.

1. Take an old CD or CD-R and put it in the oven, standing up. Put it against a glass cup or so. Don't use any metal as a holder. It will look like the image shown below. This image is a computer generated and rendered image from Carl Licke / Turbid design but the CD part in the middle is an actual taken picture. Notice the difference in the pattern that will show up in the metal layer in the CD between a normal silver CD and a green or gold or blue CD-R. Make sure you don't inhale the gas that comes out of the CD. It's not too good for your health, so they say ;-] Note that the CD will be unusable afterwards!

Put a CD or DVD (the burnable type) in the microwave for two seconds. Watch it sparkle! Careful though, it smells bad, and any longer than ten seconds can cause a fire.
