What are some classic literature novels that I should definitely read in my lifetime?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

Ultimately, it’s up to you. You cannot go wrong with To Kill a Mocking Bird or A Tale of Two Cities.

My best suggestion is find something that appeals to you. If you’re a fan of great literature, then pick up a Charles Dickens novel. However, since many of these classics were written in past generations it is hard for some to identify with them now. That’s why I wouldn’t pick up just any classic book.

You can go to any bookstore like a Barnes and Noble and find something based on your interest. Another incentive to this is regardless of what genre peaks your interest, there’s at least one classic.

So while Dickens and Hemingway and many others are roped into the classics category, my suggestion is to find something that interests you. It’s more important to find something you can connect with than picking up a book and reading it because everyone says it is good.

I have two classic literature novels that I would recommend to anyone.

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. This is definitely not what your English teacher had in mind when it comes to classic literature. It is absolutely a book you need to read. It has been banned from school libraries because of the language, which is only further evidence that you need to read it.

From Wikipedia

-quote
The Catcher in the Rye is a 1951 novel by J. D. Salinger.3 Originally published for adults, it has since become popular with adolescent readers for its themes of teenage confusion, angst, sexuality, alienation, and rebellion.

The Catcher in the Rye is about a teenager named Holden Caulfield who’s parents don’t care about him and who’s favorite teacher sexually assaults him. The novel chronicles his attempts to make sense of these conflicts and rise above them.

The other book you need to read is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It takes a very real, very honest look at racial segregation in the deep south in the 1930’s. A black man in the poor side of town is falsely accused of raping a white woman. What makes this novel even more poignant is that it is told through the point of view of Scout, a six year old girl. Scout’s father is the black man’s court appointed attorney.

From Wikipedia

-quote
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It was instantly successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and has become a classic of modern American literature….The novel is renowned for its warmth and humor, despite dealing with the serious issues of rape and racial inequality.

Happy reading!

Your question sounds like a quest. I congratulate you on your ambition to read. Follow that ambition and you will go far. Abraham Lincoln read only Shakespeare and The King James Bible. Given his successful life, it’s hard to argue with that.
However, you may need additional titles. Perhaps you may want to try a particular author and if you like him/her, continue reading some of that writer’s work. Charles Dickens is the top of my list. Perhaps start with Great Expectations. Maybe even A Christmas Carol would be a good place to begin. Mark Twain should be on your list, as should Ernest Hemingway and Shakespeare. With Shakespeare, you can view his work more readily and easily than reading them, since they were designed to be watched, not read. But watch a play and then get a copy and read it. Depending on where you live, you can catch some Shakespeare live either in your city, or not a very long drive away.
Other writers to consider: Edgar Alan Poe, Robert Frost’s poetry, John Milton, the playwrights Sophocles and Moliere. The Modern Library made a list of its top 100 books of the 20th century. The writers on that list would be a great start too, though you might not want to start with James Joyce’s Ulysses. Here is their list: http://www.modernlibrary.com/top-100/100-best-novels/
Their list also contains the reader’s choice.
