What are some books recommended for beginning readers?

My son, nieces and nephew are all about the same age, 5 to 6 years old. My parents want me to pick out some books that are different than what they already have. Since they are just beginning or have not been reading long, they will need to be books that are for the first stages for reading.

What are some recommendations for their reading level?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

These are some great books for beginner readers:

1. The Easter Egg by Jan Brett is a delightful Easter picture book for children. Those children who are 3 to 6 years old will be delighted to see in the story of a rabbit named Hoppi and a very special Easter Egg in the The Easter Egg by Jan Brett.

2. Are You my Mother by P.D. Eastman is a beginner book for beginner readers. It is very popular with younger children who enjoy reading the story again and again.

3. We Are Extremely Very Good Recyclers is a good children's picture book for three to six-year old which features Charlie and Lola, the characters especially created by Lauren Child and featured on Playhouse Disney. This provides introduction to the importance of recycling and concern for the environment stressing the role children can play in protecting the environment by recycling.

4. Fancy Nancy is the first picture book of Jane O'Connor. This book is about a little girl who loves everything fancy. This is also recommended for 3 to 6 years old.

I'll agree on the Dr. Seuss books. My 6-year-old son and ex-wife were out of town for a month--and when they came home we went to lunch. While we were there, he says "You want me to read a book to you?" I thought he'd be making up the story as usual...but I almost fell out of my seat when he read one of those little cardboard books cover to cover. He needed help with some harder words, like "should," but he sure read it.
