Signs and symptoms relating to lung cancer usually do not show in early stages of the disease. They only appear when the cancer has advanced. These signs and symptoms include chronic cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, excessive weight loss, lack of appetite, frequent loss of voice, malaise, and bone and joint pain.
Lung cancer is diagnosed through physical exam, tests and lung biopsy. During a physical exam, a physician will ask the patient about his or her current and past medical history and listen to the lungs with a stethoscope. Tests performed include blood work, a CT scan of the chest, an MRI of the chest and a chest x-ray. A lung biopsy involves the surgical removal of lung tissue samples. The samples are studied under a microscope to confirm if cancer is present.
