What are said to be the most common contributors to night terrors?
I have many friends who seem to suffer from night terrors and I used to suffer from them myself. I however was able to overcome this a few years back, but I am now curious as to what some reasons for these terrors are. Have studies shown any solid factual information on what causes these, or what some possible triggers may be for individuals having these types of terrors? I know these terrors can become pretty severe and lead to some unfortunate happenings.

Some studies seem to indicate that night terrors could be associated with the following:
1. sleep deprivation
2. traumas (physical or emotional)
3. fever (not the low grade kind)
4. medications/ chemicals that affect the central nervous system (examples: caffeine, marijuana, tranquilizers, antidepressants) See link #2 below for a detailed list.
It seems some researchers have dismissed night terrors as harmless but there are others who believe that the activities that might occur during night terrors can also be very dangerous.
