What are real, official English scones like?

I don't think the scones I see here in the coffee shops are what real scones are suppose to be. What would a scone in England be like?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The interiors are softer, fluffier and they are not as sweet.

My (English) recipe is as follows

~8oz of Self Raising flour
1.5 - 2oz. of sugar
~ 2-2.5oz. of salted butter
pinch of salt
Milk to bind the rest,

That is the 'basis' recipe.

to that you can add
rasins or other dried fruit.
or fine slices apricots
or no sugar and add shredded cheese
or less sugar for a savory taste.

as a general rule, British scones are way less sweet and a lot fluffier than their US counterparts.

Heaven? That's not an acceptable answer? Aw. No, but seriously, think of it like a very dense, slightly drier, sweet biscuit. The best ones have little cranberries or other fruits in them.

They come in a few different versions:

Lived overseas, had some scones in England - most notably, scones and Earl Grey for teatime in Harrods. :D
