An OLED is an organic light-emitting diode (LED). It has an electroluminescent layer of organic compounds, which emit light in response to an electric current. These types of LED’s are used in television screens, computer monitors, mobile phones and tablet computers. Many manufacturers like Sony offer both LED and LCD products. OLED devices tend to be thinner than LCD products but not quite as thin as Plasma screens.
OLED screens do not need a backlight although some do employ a backlight for extra contrast ratio and deeper blacks. It can display deep black levels and can also be thinner and lighter liquid crystal displays (LCD). In low ambient light conditions such as dark rooms, an OLED screen can achieve a higher contrast ratio than an LCD making it a good choice for tablet computers and book readers.
