A lot of energy efficiency really has to do with the bulb selection. Either "CFL" or Compact Florecent Lighting or "LED" Light Emmiting Diode bulbs are extremely energy efficient as opposed to generic bulbs.

Personally if you want to go really revolutionary i'd go with straight LED lighting as opposed to CFL. LEDs tend to be more versatile and reliable than CFL lighting.They make LED recessed lighting fixtures such as these.
