Hello chaddog,
High density lipoproteins (HDL) and Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) are two kinds of cholesterol. HDL consists primarily of proteins with very small quantities of cholesterol. On the other hand, LDL contains a large quantity of cholesterol with very small quantity of proteins.
Of these, LDL is called as “bad cholesterol” as it tends to clog arteries by depositing cholesterol with the walls of the arteries. This in turn increase your risk of hear disease. On the other hand, HDL is “good cholesterol” as its high levels have been shown to protect you against hear disease.
The main sources of cholesterol are: your body and food. The foods that contribute to high LDL levels are processed foods like pizza, burgers and cookies, saturated fats found in all the animal products. So avoid these foods. On the other hand, to increase your HDL eat healthy fats found in nuts, olives and flax seeds. Maintaining a healthy ratio of HDL to LDL will protect you against heart attack.
