In a nutshell a jazz standard is a musical composition. However, they are a little more complex, in order for a song to be considered a jazz standard it must be a popular song widely played by jazz musicians. These standards are one of the most essential components of jazz music because they are widely known within the jazz community.

All jazz standards do not have to be written by jazz musicians. Famous Broadway show tunes and Hollywood musicals have also contributed to the jazz community as standards.

The list of jazz standards changes over time; today the most recorded jazz standard is “Body and Soul” originally by Johnny Green. The most recorded jazz standard composed by a jazz musician is “Round Midnight” by Thelonious Monk.
