What are "intentional communities"? Is Mahalo an intentional community?
How do you build one from scratch? Where are some communities I could investigate? What kinds of intentional communities are there?

According to Wikipedia, an intentional community is:
"A planned residential community designed to have a much higher degree of teamwork than other communities. The members of an intentional community typically hold a common social, political, religious, or spiritual vision and are often part of the alternative society."
Mahalo does not have a common social, political, religious, or spiritual vision, so Mahalo does not qualify as an intentional community.
Also, intentional communities have a strict selection process, where new members are selected by the existing members. This is also something Mahalo does not do: Everyone is invited.
if you want to set up a true intentional community, your first task is to define the ' common goal'. After that, you have to set up a location (either virtual or physical), where members can gather. Next, you need to set up a 'government structure', as no community can thrive without some kind of government structure (this applies even to communist or Egalitarian communities). With this in place, you are ready to start gathering members, who are interested in the community, and believe in its 'common goal'.
One of the best and most well-known examples of an intentional community:
