Howard Stern is associated with the Libertarian Party in the United States, having attempted to run for Governor of New York in 1994. In general, the Liberterian party believes in a form of libertarianism, favoring minimally regulated, laissez-faire markets and strong civil liberties. They are also in favor of minimal regulation for cross-border migrations, and non-intervention in foreign policy.
During his run as Governor, he challenged Mario Cuomo for re-election. He planned to reinstate the death penalty, stagger highway tolls to improve traffic low and limited road work to night hours. He also believed in a right to privacy and freedom of association. Stern was highly successful in the initial efforts of his run as Governor. He received 75% of votes from his party at the nomination convention. However, his efforts were stymied when he was obliged to state his home address and financial disclosure. Stern refused and withdrew his candidacy.
