What are good sources to check out new music?

I used to listen to college radio stations to get my new music fix. I've moved, and in my area, there aren't stations that concentrate on new music. How can I get exposure to new and creative bands?

(Please, I can't afford lawyer fees or court costs, so let's leave out anything that might qualify as piracy.)

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Amazon.com lets you listen to clips of music before you buy it. If you don't know what specific music you are looking for you can try internet radio. Many radio stations broadcast their music online as well, you may even be able to find the station(s) you used to listen to before you moved. There are also stations that are only online.

TV shows like VH1's Jump Start are another way to gain exposure to new music.

splendidezine.com is one of the most exhaustive e-zines that I have ever found. . . they used to have a policy of 'we will review anything sent to us' even if it's some guy in a basement on a CD-R. . . it's been a while since I've checked them out but they are still up and within their archives they have samples of hundreds of bands they have reviewed. . . found many an amazing group flying well below the radar . . .

If you really want to check out new music you should try sellaband.com

You can actually buy a share in a band who's music you like and then when they reach $50,000 of backing they then record in a studio and you get the music as well as share in revenue of the sales of the music.

Grass roots support of new music!!

Pandora is the best free music service in existence. It's XM Radio without the commercials that XM subscribers paid to get away from but are still forced to listen to.

Coverville is a podcast that plays cover songs, that is, songs done by a different artist than the original artist.

Although the songs themselves are older, the versions are new. Also, the singers and bands tend to be fresh, indie bands.

Oh, it's a podcast, which means you can download it for free and play it on any MP3 player, or even Windows Media Player.

Or also try Mike's Hot Dish, a podcast with lots of new music:

1. Check out Pandora.com. You seed radio "stations" with songs or artists you like, and Pandora streams similar music to you. Multiple stations allow you to set up different ones for each of your likes.

2. If you're using iTunes, check out the streaming radio stations available under the 'radio' listing on the left of the screen. There are a lot of freeform stations broadcasting great music you wouldn't otherwise hear.

pandora.com is a customizable online "radio" you tell it what you like and you can hear new (and old) artist of a similar style.

Lanchcast does the same thing, but I find pandora to be easier to navigate.

Also, you could check out iTunes radio, if you have iTunes...or just download it.
