What are good Pandora stations to listen to at work?

As the new community manager for Mahalo, I spend a good 60+ hours a week on my computer. As you can imagine, music brings great joy to my life and to my overall 'zen' work environment.

I like to nod my head to mad beats and grooves - **HIGH PRIORITY to talented bands and musicians that actually write their own songs and play their own instruments** (Black Eyed Peas, okay, Fergie, no).

I do *not* listen to pop music, or anything they play on any given current Top 40 stations. No Beyonce, no Nickelback, no Forever the Sickest Kids, no Britney Spears, etc.

Currently jamming stations such as:
Led Zeppelin, Devin the Dude, MGMT, Air, Andy McKee, Bajofondo, The Beatles, Q-Tip, Charlie Hunter, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Four Tet, Jamiroquai, Atmosphere, P-Funk, Mastodon, Rush, Zero 7 and more

Throw me some suggestions fellow rockstar Mahaloans!
Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I've got a few suggestions based on this. I'm even going to go out on a limb and recommend a few oddball suggestions based on what looks to be a healthy sense of adventure. I'll mark those clearly. :)

  • The Pixies: There is no need for a why. If they aren't on your list, they probably should be.
  • The Replacements: Awesome songwriting. Indie rock that isn't just a code word for top 40 music with guitars. Some crossover with Pixies radio, but less than you might think.
  • Paint it Black (The Rolling Stones): Just seeding with Rolling Stones was too general imo, so I chose Paint it Black to focus the tone a bit more.
  • Fishbone: Tends to deliver upbeat punk and ska
  • Woody Guthrie: Basing this pick off of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Taking it back an extra generation.
  • DJ Shadow: (what I'm listening to as I write this) - He is a turntablist, but I believe that he elevates his tools to instrument in a way that few others can. The station trends toward trip-hop and chill. I like to code to it.
  • The Decemberists: Probably need no introduction. Best concert I've seen in a while.
  • Deep Forest: Another chill out option. In addition to Deep Forest, Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, and Enigma come up frequently. The Orbital also appears from time to time.
  • Louis Armstrong: I find there are times when only big band era jazz will do.
  • Alestorm: This is one of my oddball choices, but tell me that "Pirate Metal" doesn't sound intriguing. :)
  • Flogging Molly: oddball only in the sense that I haven't seen anything on the list that definitively says to me that you'd like them. Celtic Rock/ Celtic Punk dominates this station.

Happy Listening. I'm going to leave you with an Alestorm teaser just to give you more motivation to give them a try.

Great answer, I was going to answer this but you pretty much covered all and everything.

One other thing corey, you can grab foxy tunes for any gecko engined browser (like firefox or flock) , and use it with last.fm scrobing.

Pandora is also conducting a promotion until January 1st with ford, you can try out their premium service Pandora One for 3 days free.

Check their twitter feed for the link.

My go to stations at work tend to be:

Hard Rock (which is seeded with Tool, NIN and Disturbed),
The Crystal Method,
Dethklok (which tends to play a lot of Rammstein, kind of a high school throwback),
and
Wu-Tang Clan

Crystal Method is best for straight up concentrating on work I'd say, the other stuff is good to keep me in a good mood.

Unless it's Friday afternoon, then all bets are off. Could be James Brown, could be some disco.
