Walking is the best exercise that is easy on the knees and good for people with minor health problems. Of course the pace you walk and terrain you walk makes a huge difference. See the link to determine how many calories you can burn in an hour as well as many other activities.

For a healthy person, who wants to simply burn a lot of calories... jumping rope burns a massive amount of calories. Use it as a part of circuit training and you can burn between 450 and 600 calories in an hours time. Jumping rope alone can burn between 500 and 1,000 calories an hour. It's really hard to keep up a high pace. Running can burn an high amount of calories as well.

If you have stairs, you can climb up and down those. You don't gain much for the trip down, but the trip up is helpful.

Dancing is another great way to sweat off some weight.

If you want to involve weights, simply put canned good items in pantyhose. Tie the pantyhose ends and make weights. Physical therapist use this with their patients.

There is really no need to buy any high dollar, fancy exercise equipment to get into shape. You shouldn't push yourself and it is recommended to get a doctors opinion before starting a fitness program. Just use commonsense.
