What are good alternatives to using chlorine bleach based cleaners in the kitchen?

In an effort to 'go green' and to avoid potential health hazards of the chemicals used in bleach based cleaners, we're switching to more eco-friendly products in the kitchen and around the home.

Do you have specific non-bleach cleaners you can recommend or have you heard of any that work well?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

These are the best and green tips to replace Chlorine Bleach at home. I have tried some of this like the baking soda and white vinegar and they are also effective.

These are the best alternatives for Chlorine bleach based cleansers:

1. Use baking soda by adding 1/2 c to your laundry deterger. This will boost its cleaning power and leave clothes white and bright too.

2. Use Distilled White Vinegar by presoaking whites in a solution of 1 part of white vinegar and 6 parts warm water. Set this aside or overnight and wash clothes as normal. The odor of vinegar will disappear and you are helping the environment at the same time.

3. You can also use an oxygen-based bleach because this is more gentle on the environment at to your clothes too. There are some brand names that manufactures this like OxiClean, Clorox 2, Country Save Oxygen Bleach and Seventh Generation Oxygen Bleach.

4. Another mild alternative to bleach is hydrogen peroxide. Just add a cup of hydrogen peroxide to your full load but don't use this on colored clothing.

5. Borax is another cleaning agent that you can use. You can make a cleaning solution for your floor by mixing once cup of borax with one gallon of hot water, a spray-on solution of one-half cup borax with two cup of hot water ore even sprinkle over carpets before vacuuming for a carpet cleaner.

For your kitchen cleaner, make up a solution of 2 cups of warm water, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 15 drops of lemon essential oil and 10 drops of lavender essential oil. The oils are disinfectants.
