The U.S.D.A came up with the gardening hardiness zones. They are also known as climate zones. Zone 1 is the coldest and Zone 11 the warmest. Go to a local store and pick up some packets of flower seeds or something. Look on the back of the package and chances are it will show a zone map. I imagine you can also google U.S.D.A. hardiness zone maps.
