The term energy vampires is being increasingly used to describe those devices that keep drawing and using electricity when they are turned off or in standby mode. These devices can consume as much as 10-15 watts in standby mode, so much so standby power can often amount to 10 -22 percent of power consumed in a household. Normally devices that have switches that break circuits and do not have any clocks do not consume any standby power. Some of the biggest energy vampires in a home are printers, computers and electric toothbrushes. Normally people deal with energy vampire devices by just unplugging them when they are not in use. Some even invest in a power strips which only draw electricity when they are switched on and plug electronic items into it.
