Hi @palms, dust mites are microscopic bugs that primarily live on dead skin cells that are regularly shed by humans and pet animals. They are harmless to most people and they don't carry diseases but they can cause allergic reactions for those who have asthma and those who are allergic to their feces.

Beds are their primary habitat where a third of their life occurs. A mattress may have about 100,000 to 10 million mites inside. Dust mites prefer warm, moist surroundings like the inside of a mattress when someone is on it. Bedroom and carpeting household upholstery also support high mite populations.

*Are dust mites harmful?
For most people they are disgusting but not actually harmful but since their skin and feces can cause allergic reactions, they can be harmful for those who have allergies. In addition, they can also cause nasal polyps to grow within the nose.

Dust mites are very tiny, even microscopic, bugs that live on mattresses, rugs and even on human skin. They are most abundant on beds, but can also be found anywhere as long as there is detritus like dead skin cells (dander) shed by man and animals around. They feed on them.

They are not harmful to most people, and they don’t carry germs with them. What’s being a microscopic organism if you are a carrier of other microscopic organisms? The thing is their feces and old skin can cause some people to have allergic and/or asthmatic reactions. If the place is not properly sanitized or cleaned, not only those who already have allergies and asthma are affected, but those who have none of these too. They would eventually develop any or both of these conditions with constant exposure to them.

To get rid of them, the key term is “dust control.” As per http://www.ehso.com/ehshome/dustmites.php, you can do the following to take care of dust mites and allergens.
1) Enclose mattresses, rugs and other like stuff with plastic cover.
2) Wash them with very hot water.
3) Use synthetic fabrics.
4) Reduce temperature and humidity.
5) Clean frequently.
6) Use air purifiers.
