Currants are a relative of gooseberries. They are thornless upright shrubs that yield glossy berries. In order to called a 'currant' the shrub must be in the genus 'Ribes' which is native to the Northern Hemisphere.

A currant is a small (red, black, pink or white) fruit that is used to make jellies, jams, smoothies and juices...

Currant are a fruit often found on a small tree, shrub, or bramble. There was a couple larger currant trees in a neighborhood near my childhood home. Currant come in several colors, red being the sweetest ‘IMHO’ it has been said the white are sweet and crisp tasting, and that black are too tart and strong tasting for the easily puckered, champagne currant have a more fragile flavor and crisp currant tartness. Currant are used in a wide variety of recipes from entrée to dessert the currant is full of vitamin C more so than even the orange.
