There are two major types of digital cameras. Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras and Compact Digital cameras and each have different issues. With a DSLR you can scratch the front and rear elements of the lens. A front element scratch is not so severe since the front element collects the light but the light is unfocused. A scratch on the rear element is near the focal plane and can show up on images if severe.
Another problem is the viewing screen. These can be difficult to see in bright light especially with a compact digital camera that you have to hold at arm’s length to focus and expose the image. The screen can also be annoying to others if you are trying to get a picture at a concert or play. A camera that has an optical viewfinder allows you to hold the eyepiece to your eye and resolves this problem. Compact digital cameras are also hard to hold steady at slow shutter speeds. With a DSLR you can cradle the camera close to your eye and gain steady support form your head and shoulders.
