Chicken pox or varicella, is a very contagious illness which is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV). This illness can spread easily when an infected person sneezes or coughs in the open air. It can also be contacted if you have direct contact with the secretions that comes out from the rash of infected persons.
The rash is usually small, red, and itchy and resembles insect bites. It is also a liquid-filled blister that opens up and crustes all over. It occurs on the on the scalp, face, chest and the back. Chicken pox is contagious while the individual is still ill or has not been vaccinated.
Chicken pox (varicella) used to be considered as an infection every child must have. But with the introduction of the chickenpox vaccine, the illness can be prevented effectively.
If you get infected, it is better to allow it run it full course, but you can take antiviral drugs (such as acyclovir) and antihistamine or apply calamine lotion on your skin to ease the itch.
It is a serious illness for pregnant women and can harm the fetus.
