What are appropriate rates for freelance graphic design?
Can any experienced designers help me out with this? I plan to charge fairly low rates since I'm new to freelancing, but obviously still want to make a decent amount.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Freelance graphic design work is based on portfolio and project. If you have a strong portfolio of clients and you have completed outstanding work on a project like the one you're being asked to do, you will receive top rate.
A good way to find a good fair price for things like this is to put a post up on Criagslist for the work that you need to be completed. You'll receive a ton of low, medium and a few outrageously high bids. Remove the lowest 10% and the highest 10% of Craigslist bids. Next, send individual RFQ's to established designers. Average the established firm quotes with your Craigslist findings and you'll have a number that you can stand behind.

M$But since Craigslist is full of designers looking for work; cheap is good.
Having had worked with many designers in my time, I quickly learned that it's all about communication, perception, understanding. When I say "chair" what do you see: Adirondac, LazyBoy, plastic patio chair, dining room table chair?
Bottom line vandal913, your rate will depend on how much time you spen with the client and on the project. Are they nice, friendly clients or demanding and hard to get along with?
Good luck.
