He is also a close friend of Russia former leader Gorbachev. He has been very successful at business and he mixes business and politics all the time. He is hated by Russian Mafia because he wants gambling to be limited and he is loved and respected by important people such as Margaret Thatcher. Yet not everyone buys into the widespread belief that Mr Lebedev, an ardent Anglophile, is all he makes himself out to be.
Olga Kryshtanovskaya, a prominent socialist regarded as Russia's leading authority on the oligarchs, says that Mr Lebedev is nothing more than a very cleverly disguised agent of the Kremlin.
"In his soul he is an intelligence agent, but he has been remarkably quick to adopt the manners and rules of the game of big business by becoming a fashionable dandy," she said. "He is very well connected, a master of intrigue who is behind all the curtains."
The tycoon's approach cannot have been carried out, she said, "without the approval of the authorities".

The facts that someone thinks that doesn't make it true, but it is worth mentioning in building up a balanced picture.
