I'd say that perhaps the best example of a newly successful type of home-based business is the eBay seller. It wasn't really that many years ago that eBay didn't exist at all! There are now large numbers of people who make income every month with eBay. In fact, if I remember correctly, the company even has a department that exists solely to communicate and work with the Power Sellers.

Blogging has also become a way for many people to earn money in the last several years, with some people making five figures at it every month. It's hard to imagine what's next, but I'm sure it'll be coming along shortly.
