Many are games, but I use a few of the applications much more than others. Facebook, Twitterific, WeDict, Wikipanion, Epocrates, Air Sharing, and Mobile News (AP) are used more frequently than the others.
I think all of the apps are self explanatory except Air Sharing which allows the phone to be mounted on the computer to facilitate file transfers for offline browsing.

M$1. Lightsaber - because it was free and cool.
2. Pandora - very highly rated and I love discovering new music
3. Google Mobile App - anything that provides mobile functionality for great sites is worth it, plus it has voice recognition search, which is pretty cool
4. Max Quick - the Pocket and the Pendant - because my co-worker and friend Mark Jeffrey is the author
5. iChess - because I like playing chess and it was free
6. Wikipanion - to make it easier to search wikipedia
7. Light - someone told me it would come in handy as a reading light.
8. Ocarina - just for the cool factor, and i love weird ways of making music
9. Backgammon Lite - Another fun game that doesn't involve a lot of flashing lights or penguins flying across the screen
10. LA Traffic Cam - so I can see what the traffic is like for my work commute
11. iBanjo - doesn't really do much, but it was free and i couldn't find one that had banjo chords

I've probably spent about $50 on iPhone apps, but the free ones get used the most.
