What actually causes a hangover?

I understand that to some degree your body has been poisoned when you drink so much that the next day you are hungover to the point of throwing up or just feeling nautious, but what exactly is going on in your body that causes that reaction? Sometimes if I have two or three beers relatively quickly and get a nice “buzz” on and then stop drinking, I feel a bit hungover a couple of hours later. Why is this?

The main cause of your hangover, is the fact that you have decided to drink more than the amount of alcohol your body is capable of taking. Alcohol in drinks is classified as a drug in medical circles, accordingly this chemical is considered by your body as a toxin. By drinking alcoholic drinks, your body is being flooded with toxins that needs to be cleansed, one of the natural reactions of your body is to release enzymes to discharge the alcohol from your body, however as the level of toxins increases, your bodies enzymes will be outnumbered, thereby causing the person to experience the classic case of hangover.

Accordingly, the primary toxins identified to be the cause of hangover are the Ethanol, which is made at the time of fermentation, Acetaldehyde, a spin-off during the time when liver attempts to collapse the alcohol, and Congeners, "toxic substances created during the alcohol fermentation process."

"When you drink alcohol, your body actually requires more water than usual in order to perform this function efficiently. If water and fluids are not readily available to aid in this detoxification process, the body redistributes whatever water is available. All parts of the body are affected by this redistribution of fluid, even the brain. And you wonder why your head hurts!"

There are several reasons why a person that drinks too much alcohol has a hangover the next day.

First is dehydration. Alcohol acts as a diuretic, which increases urination and removes essiential fluids from the body. It also depletes the body of essential vitaimins and minerals, as well as lowering blood sugar, all of which can cause the hangover effect.

It may be a toxic reaction or form of alcohol poisoning. Dr. Ian Calder of the National Hospital for Neurosurgery in London supports the theory that complex organic molecules such as methanol and acetone that are found in some drinks can cause a hangover.

Mack Mitchell, professor at Johns Hopkins University, suggests that a hangover is the result of the body's withdrawal from alcohol. The cells in the brain change in the presence of alcohol and the body is in a state of withdrawal until the cells get used to not having the alcohol. Also, alcohol has a swelling effect on the blood vessels in the head, which causes a headache.
