I do actually know a lot of people that have turned their lives around pretty dramatically. Though I'm not sure if any of them are quite as extreme as yours!

PS It's great to share those stories, because they're such an inspiration to others that find themselves in a deep hole. Of course it's not so easy to share that stuff, and it's very much a personal decision how far anyone wants to do it.
Many things fell into place when I stopped drinking alcohol and changed everything about my life.. when you have absolutely nothing to lose..I mean really _absolutely nothing_.. then betting it all is not only easier but more of a "I must do this and make it work" because failure is truly not a option.. coming to believe in a life on life's terms has meant many successes for me, one minute at a time.
When I had to really ask myself not "what am I going to eat today?" but "how am I going to eat today?" the choices became easier ...one single decision led to one single success and then another and then another and then another.
I was standing on a Main street sidewalk, facing a bar, leaning on the lamppost and smoking a cigarette when a stranger passed by and pointed behind me. He stopped for just a moment and said "You're standing in the right place...but you're facing the wrong direction".
As he walked away I looked over my shoulder and behind me was a church. That was the moment everything changed.

"This is American Detox" sounds like a good title for this memoir.. or how to ..on the subject of going from nothing to something. Now I just need 50 thousand words all strung together with proper punctuation and in complete sentences.
I have been told on more than one occasion that this story has to be in print so I keep a great detailed journal and even some rather personal and embarrassing video of the journey in its earliest stages.

Ironically, this photo is for an article about how she's perfected the art of losing Academy Awards for Best Actress - yet about a week after that article, went on to win her first Oscar for her performance in "The Reader." I think that about sums up my life, too. I get used to losing, and then all of a sudden life blindsides me.
